Services & Procedures
Orlando Periodontics provides a comprehensive array of services to detect and treat periodontal (gum) disease. Gum diseases are often painless and it is not unusual for it to go undetected until it is too late. Many who have gum disease do not realize they have it. Sometimes the only way to determine if you have the disease is through a periodontal evaluation performed by a periodontist.
Common symptoms includes:
- Persistent swollen, red or bleeding gums, especially during brushing or flossing,
- Gums that pulled away from the teeth,
- Persistent bad breath,
- Changes in the way your teeth fit together,
- Pus between your teeth and gums, and
- Sores in your mouth.
Following are some of the procedures that periodontists use to combat gum disease.
Non-Surgical Treatments
Non-surgical periodontal treatment plans may include scaling and root planing (a thorough cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus or tartar from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins). Typically your periodontist will incorporate follow-up therapy that includes antimicrobial medications and such as local delivery antimicrobials and host modulation, as needed on a case-by-case basis.
After scaling and root planing, many patients do not require any further active treatment. However, most patients will require ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain health.
Surgical Treatments
If your periodontist determines that the tissue around your teeth is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with non-surgical treatments, surgical procedures may be prescribed to ensure oral health, including:
- Crown lengthening,
- Regenerative procedures,
- Soft tissue grafts, or
- Pocket reduction.
Cosmetic Procedures
Orlando Periodontics delivers state-of-the-art procedures that might also be called "smile enhancers."
Cosmetic procedures include:
- Crown Lengthening
- Soft Tissue Grafts
- Ridge Augmentation
Crown lengthening can be use to correct "gummy smiles" or uneven smile lines. Soft tissue grafts and other root-covering procedures are used to cover exposed roots that look unappealing and may lead to root decay. Your dentist or periodontist may also recommend crown lengthening to make a restorative or cosmetic dental procedure possible. Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. Perhaps your tooth is decayed, broken below the gum line, or has insufficient tooth structure for a restoration, such as a crown or bridge.
Soft tissue grafts can be used to cover roots or develop gum tissue where absent due to excessive gingival recession. During this procedure, your periodontist takes gum tissue from your palate or another donor source to cover the exposed root. This can be done for one tooth or several teeth to even your gum line and reduce sensitivity.
Sometimes when you lose one or more teeth, you can get an indention in your gums and jawbone where the tooth used to be because the jawbone recedes when it no longer is holding a tooth in place.
Called Ridge Augmentation, periodontists fill in the indentation to recapture the natural contour of your gums and jaw. A new tooth can then be created that is natural looking, easy-to-clean and beautiful.
Sedation
Orlando Periodontics knows the high level of anxiety and pain that some patients may experience while undergoing dental procedures. We use sedation techniques to reduce fear and apprehension commonly associated with periodontic treatments and to manage pain during dental appointments. Most patients are totally relaxed and often have little or no memory of their extensive dental treatments. The results include patients receive a higher quality of care, more complex treatment in less time and leave our office feeling less tired.
Call today to set up an appointment to get a periodontal evaluation. Our professionals will prescribe appropriate therapies based upon your individual needs.
